A memorial service will be held at noon November 6, 2021, at Resurrection Church, 2940 Commonwealth Ave., Charlotte, NC, and will be officiated by Pastors Billy Miller and Rollo Leimer. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service at 11:00 AM.
Mrs. Whitlock was born on January 4, 1934, in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies, the first of three daughters to the late Winston L. Fray and Daphne Bellinger Fray Mair. She immigrated from Jamaica in 1946 and lived in New York City as she grew up. She spent 5 years in Atlanta, Georgia, prior to moving to Charlotte in 1978. Mrs. Whitlock attended Hunter College in New York City and was a graduate of Columbia University Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in New York City where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and began her career as a Registered Nurse. She later attended Emory University in Atlanta and became an Adult Nurse Practitioner. She retired from Cabarrus County Health Department in 1994 as Nursing Director. After retirement she worked part-time for Community Health Services in Monroe, NC, then volunteered her services to Love In The Name Of Christ, NC Senior Health Insurance Information Program, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center Library Services, Resurrection Lutheran Church, and Resurrection Christian School. In addition, she was a longtime member of Simmons YMCA where she made many friends.
Mrs. Whitlock is survived by her son, Reid E. Whitlock, of Kigali, Rwanda, and daughter-in-law Ornella and children Joelia, Joella and Joanna; two daughters, Kyshia A. Whitlock of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and Pamela Whitlock Bell and son-in-law Karl I. Bell, of West Bloomfield, Michigan; stepson Eugene Whitlock of San Carlos, California, and wife Romina and children Dante, Seychelle and Ellis; two sisters, Alison Y. Pope of Melbourne, Florida, and Phyllis D. George of East Point, Georgia; one brother, Ronald D. Mair of Hapeville, Georgia; four grandchildren, Alexis Douglas, Kristina Bell, Cameron Bell and Alberto Bladín; three nieces, Suzanne Pope, Lauren Pope and Melissa George; two nephews, Brandon Mair (Desiree), and Dorian Mair (Gayla), and great-nephew Elijah Kane. Mrs. Whitlock was predeceased by her sister Carol P. Fray, also of Charlotte.
Valerie’s devotion to her family and her faith in her Lord Jesus Christ were the hallmarks of her life. She will be deeply missed but her influence never forgotten.
