"Tom"
Mr. Nalley, 75, died peacefully at home with his family on Sunday, September 5, 2011. Tom was born at home May 6, 1936, in Easley, SC. He was the son of the late Robert Bailey Nalley and Ina Grace Nalley.
Tom is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Mary Hammett Nalley of Charlotte and Denver, NC. Tom is also survived by his son, William Gregory Nalley and daughter-in-law Amy Ayers Nalley of Baltimore and a daughter, Robin Nalley May and son-in-law Jeff May of Charlotte. Tom has three grandchildren, Devon Melissa Nalley, Grace Frances Nalley and Cooper Ayers Nalley.
After leaving Daniel Construction Company as project manager, Tom came to Charlotte in 1970 with McDevitt and Street. Then in 1972, he left and opened his own company, Carolina Concrete Pumping. Tom was a member of the Professional Construction Estimators' Association, on the board of the Association of General Contractors, and also served on the bank board of BB&T. Tom was a member of the Masons and Shriners and the Carmel Country Club. Tom also served in the US Army. He was a member of the Providence Baptist Church.
Tom was known for his integrity, strong passion and love for his family and friends, and an enduring work ethic. Perhaps two of this greatest gifts were his sense of humor and uncanny wit, both of which he used freely. Tom was responsible for the construction of many components of downtown Charlotte's beautiful skyline and surrounding areas.
After living in Charlotte full-time for many years, Tom and Mary built a house on Lake Norman that he loved and enjoyed up to his final days.
Words cannot fully describe "Tom Nalley", but each of us who loves him cherishes the good times, his contrived pranks, and his magnetic personality that expressed his zest for life. Tom even left behind a fan club at the Presbyterian Hospital before he came home for his final days. Tom was devoted to his family and friends and will be greatly missed by many.
Visitation will be held this evening, Tuesday September 6, 2011 from 6 until 8 pm at Harry & Bryant Company, 500 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The funeral will be held at 2 pm Wednesday September 7th at Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte, with the Reverend Dr. R. Alton Cadenhead officiating.
