Born in Union County to Hurley and Rossie Medlin Chaney, Thurman proudly served in the US Air Force for four years. He earned National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Married to the former Juanita Deason, they raised their children Galan and Roslyn.
Thurman possessed the proverbial green thumb as his gardens boasted beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetables. When not spending time in his garden, he loved metalworking and also building small wood projects. He coached softball for Matthews Athletic Association (MARA) and was quite active as a deacon and Sunday School Teacher at the churches he formally attended.
Most recently, he was an active member of First Baptist Church of Matthews. Thurman was known as the man who was always willing to help others.
Left to mourn his loss is his wife Juanita, daughter Roslyn (David) Ross, grandson Wesley (Katie) Crofts, sister Lucille Rushing, brother Aubrey (Frances), sister-in-law Loretta Chaney and a host of nieces and nephews.
Thurman is preceded in death by his parents, son Galan, sister Joyce (Doug) Bivens, brother Hayden and brother-in-law Fernander Rushing.
Private burial with Military Honors will be held at Sharon Memorial Park.
The family will hold a visitation on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 6pm at First Baptist Church of Matthews located at 185 South Trade Street in Matthews with a memorial service at 7pm.
