Tom was born on May 20, 1927 to the late Ardena Crook Griffin and Marion Thomas Griffin of Monroe, NC. He is a graduate of Indian Trail High School and Central Piedmont Community College. From 1952-1954 Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army in the Criminal Investigative Division. He also served his community from 1946-1987 as an officer and sergeant of the Charlotte Police Department. He went on to serve an additional 12 years as a Major in the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Reserves and continued on another 3 years as a reserve deputy with the Anson County Sheriff’s Office. Although an avid gardener, clock maker and one who loved working with his hands, Tom would want his most recognizable achievement to be noted as his devotion to his family and his four grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, sister Betty Hooks and brother Brice Alexander Griffin. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Lillian Shirley Helms Griffin, son Larry Griffin and his wife Sandy of Monroe, NC, daughter Sheila Mull and her husband Steven of Matthews, NC. Tom is also survived by four granddaughters who he called his “baby dolls” and was most certainly the loves of his life: Victoria Hollingsworth, Stephanie Griffin, Meredith Griffin and Kristin Mull.
The family wishes to express gratitude to all of the friends and family who have prayed diligently and provided unfailing support to us all.
The Griffin family will greet friends 10:00 AM until 12 Noon, Monday, April 2, 2012 at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon. A service to celebrate his life will follow at 12 Noon in the Chapel. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
