Remembering our father, Theodore P. Flor
Theodore (Ted) was born in NYC, but survived WWII as a child in Germany from 1938 to 1949, along with his sisters, Alice and Helga. The Nazis tried to force his father to fight in Berlin, but he refused as he had become a U.S. citizen before going back to Germany. They set his Dad free near the end of the war and he walked back home to his family.
The family moved back to NYC and started up a luncheonette again, but suddenly Ted was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1949 and sent off to the Korean War. After Ted came home safely from the war, he worked in his Dad’s luncheonette until he was introduced by his Dad to our Mom, Ellen. They were married in 1955.
Ted, Helen, Mary and Ann came along from 1956 to 1966 keeping Ted and Ellen very busy raising four kids in NYC while running a delicatessen. Ted’s wife, Ellen, had a long battle with cancer and passed away in 2001.
He was an amazing grandfather to Frankie, Katie, Yvonne, Ellen and Nicole. In 2014 he became step grandfather to Grace, Bernie, Emily and Sarah.
He is survived by: his sister Alice (Flor) Schult; his children: son, Ted, and wife, Ruthann; daughters: Helen (Flor) and husband,Richard Finet; Mary (Flor) Uriarte; Ann (Flor) and husband,Tom Ricketts; along with all their children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen (Doherty) Flor; his sister, Helga (Flor) Boyens; his brother, Ricklef; and Mary’s husband, Alberto Uriarte.
He leaves behind an amazing group of friends at The Crossings Assisted Living, who made his last nine months full of fun and friendship.
We will always remember Dad’s love of roast beef, ice cream, the ocean, Lake Wylie, his collection of ball caps he stored everywhere, and his faithful cat, Friskie, who was his best buddy.
He is a hero to all of us and will be fondly remembered by countless family and friends.
Thank you, Dad! We love you and miss you!
