Theodore “Ted” Bunyan Davis III, 79, of Weddington, NC, met his Lord and Savior face to face on Friday, April 17, 2020 while at home. Ted was born on August 11, 1940 to the late Theodore Bunyan Davis Jr. and Josephine Barnes Davis in Wake County, NC. He graduated in 1958 from Needham B. Broughton High School where he played junior varsity basketball and football. He was in the Army National Guard; attended Army Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia and East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. He also attended Wing Aircraft School in Fort Rucker, Alabama and Helicopter School in Fort Wolters, Texas. Ted married the love of his life, Linda Winecoff, on December 17, 1966. They were married for 52 wonderful years. Ted loved his family and friends dearly and always put God at the center of every relationship. His life and legacy is a model that we all can use to live life to the fullest.
Ted retired from Hoechst Celanese of Charlotte, North Carolina where he served as a corporate pilot for over 20 years. He was also an aircraft and helicopter pilot in the Army National Guard and served as a helicopter pilot for WSOC. While attending East Carolina University, he worked with the campus radio and TV stations. He later became an announcer on WRAL radio station in Raleigh, NC. Ted was a founding member and dedicated servant of McKee Road Baptist Church where he volunteered in numerous roles.
Ted was a lover of people. Upon meeting him, it wouldn’t be long before he shared a joke or witticism just to get a smile. More importantly, it wouldn’t take long before he would share Jesus and the plan of salvation with you! Ted was a real handy man. He jumped to repair anything that was broken and take apart things that weren’t! In his earlier years, he enjoyed skiing, flying, and swimming. Later, he looked forward to his weekly Bible studies, golf outings, church meetings, and volunteer opportunities. Ted was a real-life Santa and loved seeing the faces of children light up during the holiday season. The interest that was most valuable to Ted was family. No matter how busy life would get, he would always make time for regular visits and traditions with the ones who were most special to him.
Those left to cherish his memory are wife, Linda Winecoff Davis; two sons, James Edward Haynes Jr. (Sherri) of Indian Trail, NC, Theodore “Teddy” Davis IV of Weddington, NC; five grandchildren; Erica Southard (Danny) of Indian Trail, NC, Brandi Joy (Todd) of Waxhaw, NC, Jason Efird (Carla) of Monroe, NC, James “Eddie” Edward Haynes III of Indian Trail, NC, and Taylor Lynne Haynes (Daniel) of Indian Trail, NC; five greatgrandchildren; Presley, Harper, Davis, Paxton, Bryson, and Beckett; sister; Lynne Peters of Cary, NC, and brother; Dennis Davis of Cary, NC.
