Born December 11, 1928 in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of the late Talmadge Allen Henry and Florrie Tidwell Henry. As a baby, Tal often traveled to hotels such as The Peabody and The New Yorker with his father and his band, Tal Henry and His North Carolinians, which was a popular swing band in the twenties and thirties.
Tal attended Fishburne Military School and graduated from Greensboro High School, where he played four sports (football, basketball, baseball and track). He attended North Carolina State University.He transferred to Florida State University, where he played football on the 1950 undefeated team. He served in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was president of Chain Conveyor Systems, known nationally for industrial material handling.
Tal was an avid golfer at Myers Park Country Club and he played tennis at Olde Providence Racquet Club. Tal worshipped at Myers Park Presbyterian Church and also at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
When Tal was in the company of family or friends, he always put others at ease with a comment or story to lighten the mood. He looked at the bright side of life as he shared his good-natured personality.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Reavis Henry; son, Tobin Allen Henry (Sarah) of Davidson, NC; and four beloved grandchildren, Matthew Hawkins (Rosalie) of Atlanta, Georgia, Harris Cole Henry of Washington, DC, Maggie Henry York (Adam), and Madeline Henry Sorrill (Jake) of Jacksonville, Illinois; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Henry Hardin; son, Kyle Talmadge Henry; and son, Talmadge Allen Henry, III.
A service to celebrate Tal’s life will be held at 11:00 am Friday, April 8, 2016 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte. The family will receive friends in Oxford Hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
