The funeral will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastor Judi Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at Magnolia Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday morning from 11:00 a.m. to Noon at Wesley United Methodist Church. Those serving as pallbearers will be Justin Carpenter, Jared Carpenter, Jennings Carpenter, Jamison Carpenter, Adison Neal, Jordan Bittner, Matthew Cotten and Roger Couch. Those serving as honorary pallbearers will be Meredith Bittner and Stephanie Cotten.
Shirley was born September 25, 1930 to Alexander B. and Vola Moore Couch of Day, Arkansas. She was a devoted 46-year charter member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She sang in the choir for many years and with her husband, William O. Carpenter, served as Youth Group Leader. She was a devout Christian her entire life.
Shirley spent most of her work career as the Manager of the Accounts Receivable Department at Atrium Carolinas Medical Center. She also served as a substitute teacher over the years having earned a teaching degree at Arkansas State College and at one time owned her own hair salon.
She was devoted to her family. She was a patient and devoted wife, a loving and character building mother and a doting grandmother and great grandmother. She was also a loyal and loving daughter, sister and aunt. She worked hard to instill Christian beliefs in her children and grandchildren.
Shirley was preceded in death by her loving husband of over 49 years William O. Carpenter; her parents; and her two brothers Junior and Bill Couch.
She is survived by her son, William Stephen Carpenter of Indian Land, SC; two daughters, Monica Ann Bittner and her husband Charles of Orange Park, FL and Leesa Katrina Neal and her husband Zachary of Charlotte; her son, Mark E. Carpenter and his wife Kimberly of Charlotte; her sister, Mary Owens and her husband Boyce of Moore, OK; her sisters-in-law, Jetta Peters and Pat Couch; six grandsons, Justin Carpenter and his wife Samantha, Jared Carpenter and his girlfriend Katie Moore, Jennings Carpenter, Jamison Carpenter, Adison Neal and his wife Lisa, and Jordan Bittner; two granddaughters, Meredith Bittner and Stephanie Cotten and her husband Matthew; three great-grandchildren, Josephine Carpenter, Lucas Cotten and Miles Bundrick; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials are preferred to Wesley United Methodist Church, 3715 Rea Road, Charlotte, NC 28226.
