CHARLOTTE - James “Scott” Burton, age 50, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, May 20, 2013 at Presbyterian’s Harris Hospice Unit. He had been recently diagnosed with a chronic illness and his health declined rapidly.
Scott was born on June 9, 1962 in Baltimore, MD and the family moved to Charlotte in 1963. He is survived by his wife Lisa Ann Burton, children Jessica AnnMarie Pontes and Justin Albert Pontes, grandson Aiden James Pontes-Landis, father Thomas Reed Burton, Sr. and stepmother Jayne Callaham Burton, sister Michele Burton Earnhardt, brothers Thomas Reed Burton, Jr. and wife Susan, Stephen Michel Burton and wife Angie, nieces Megan Burton, Paige Burton, Hannah Earnhardt and nephew Will Earnhardt. Scott also leaves behind a mother and father-in-law, Ruth and Vernon Beasley and a special brother and sister-in-law, Greg and Sheree Beasley, all of Mount Airy, NC. Scott was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy Michel Burton, in 1996. We take great comfort in knowing they are together and watching over us in the arms of our Heavenly Father.
Early in his career, Scott worked at Piedmont Floor Covering, a family-owned business founded by his grandfather, James Frazier Burton. In 1995, Scott joined his father and two brothers in founding Burton Floor Covering. Building sound ethical relationships, many of which grew into enduring friendships, was his hallmark.
Scott loved people without condition, particularly those who needed love, help and understanding. He was a genuine friend. He most enjoyed spending time with Lisa, his children and grandson, and all of his family. He loved all animals, especially his dog, Nikki, and polar bears, he loved the beach, the pool, discovering new recipes and preparing special meals, going for walks, riding his bike and eating his beloved Baltimore steamed crabs!
Words cannot describe how much we already miss him, his contagious laughter and his sense of humor.
A Catholic Mass will be celebrated for Scott on Friday, May 24, 2013, at 2:00 pm at St. Luke Catholic Church, 13700 Lawyers Road in Mint Hill, NC. Visitation will immediately precede the Mass at 1:00 pm at the church, and a reception will follow in the Family Life Center. The Mass will be celebrated by close family friend, Rev. Joseph Mulligan..
