She was born July 12, 1923 in Kings Creek, South Carolina to the late Robert Jackson and Sallie Pearl Love. She was preceded in death by her husband Laney Stewart Purser. Her first husband Preston Nevins McCurry was killed in action during World War II. Mrs. Purser was also preceded in death by eleven of her twelve siblings to include her sisters; Getrude Compton, Estelle Beam, Margaret Carpenter, Ethel Mobley, Rebecca Helms, and also her brothers; Edward, Lewis, Thedore, David, and Odell Love.
She is survived by her daughter Olivia Hodge and son Dwight Purser (Joy), five grandchildren; Melissa York (Ryan), Jennifer Hall (Andy), Lauren Wilson (Eric), Brent Hodge (Amanda) and Ashley Minn (Jay) as well as eight great-grandchildren; Tristan Dudley, Easton and Mia York, Colin and Evan Hall, Avery and Kylie Wilson and Caleb Hodge. She is also survived by her brother Olin Love and sister Lib Redmond.
She was proud to have served in World War II in the Women’s Army Corps. She was stationed at Walter Reed Army Hospital. The highlight of her time there was escorting General Dwight D. Eisenhower to visit wounded soldiers.
After her discharge from service, she completed cosmetology school and was a beautician for 65 years. She enjoyed dancing, gardening and planting numerous flowers inside her home and around her yard. She could root just about any flower. The African violet was her favorite.
She was a long time member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Epworth Sunday School Class. She was a member of the American Legion Post 400 for 43 years.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, June 27, 2022 at 11am at McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park. Visitation with family will be held at 10am prior to the service. Burial with military honors immediately following at the service at Sharon Memorial Park.
