Ruth was born in Pittsburgh, PA on October 22, 1929. She was the only child of Margaret Kroehling and Lester Eidson. Ruth was a beautiful, spirited and strong woman. After raising her children, she worked at Ivey's for many years. She was an accomplished dancer, swimmer and ice skater, and taught ice skating at the Polar Palace in Charlotte and Boone. Ruth and her devoted husband, Don enjoyed many years of square dancing and ballroom dancing together. She had a special connection with animals, particularly wire haired fox terriers, and her last "baby" Bandit, a long haired dachshund.
Survivors include her loving husband of the past 26 years, Don Rice and sons, Lawrence "Chip" Holden and wife Carol, and Jeff Holden and wife Kathy, all of Winston-Salem. Also in Winston-Salem are four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Survivors also include stepson, Garry (Susan) of Matthews; stepdaughter, Karen Reece of Charleston, SC; four step-grandchildren; and two step-great-granddaughters.
The family would like to extend special appreciation for the care received at the Asbury Methodist facility for the past six years, and to the Levine & Dickson Hospice House.
Services will be held 10:15 a.m. Monday, April 11th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6828 Old Reid Road, Charlotte, NC 28210. The family will receive visitors in the church chapel from 9:30-10:00 a.m. prior to the service.
