Born May 4, 1939 in Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Davis and Minnie Lee Davis. Following graduation from East Mecklenburg High School she attended Queen’s College. She met the love of her life, Melvin Hammer, at her father’s grocery store while working.
Ellen was a member of Idlewild Baptist Church. In her Sunday School she went on various trips. In her spare time she spent time with her family and friends.
The joy of Ellen’s life was her family. She adored her husband, Melvin Hammer. They married in 1959 and enjoyed 40 years of marriage. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her two sons: Mike and Renee of Belmont, Phillip and Leigh Anne of Midland, and her four beloved grandchildren: John Michael Hammer, Kristie Hammer-Marr, Katie Hammer and Jennifer Hammer; and her four great-grandchildren: Jayce Marr, Juliana Marr, Tristan Hammer and Ethan Hammer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Hammer and her parents Floyd Davis and Minnie Lee Davis.
A service of death and resurrection to celebrate Ellen’s life will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, March 8, 2020 at McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte. The family will receive friends before the service at 12:00pm at the same location. There will be a small reception at the funeral home after the graveside service.
