Ruth Erma (Wright) Carney, 88, of Charlotte, NC, died of a broken heart on Wednesday, June 29, 2016, seventeen weeks after she lost the love of her life. She was born on May 23, 1928, in Jones Mills, PA to William and Harriet (Shuey) Wright.
Ruth grew up as the Postmaster’s daughter in the small town of Jones Mills, PA. Later, she attended Ramsey High School in Mt. Pleasant, PA.
On April 18, 1957, Ruth asked Jesus Christ to be her personal Savior, the same evening as her husband. Shortly thereafter, when Walter was called into the ministry, she became a pastor’s wife, a role she faithfully fulfilled for over 50 years. What a beautiful way to begin their ministry together!
Survivors include 2 sons, Donald (Carolyn) Carney, of Mexico, and David (Diane Carney) of Vincent, OH; 2 daughters, Carol (David) Knepshield, of Little Hocking, OH, and Verna (Gary) Clark of Indian Trail, NC; 1 daughter-in-law, Jennifer (Bill) Morris, of Belpre, OH; and 1 sister, Esther Carney, of Acme, PA. She is also survived by her 17 grandchildren: Julia, Jeffrey, Jill, Jennifer, Janice, Joel, James, Joanna, John, Misty, Jeremy, Cory, Holly, Shelley, Heather, Stephanie, Rachel and 40 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, of 70 years on March 1, 2016; her parents, William and Harriet Wright; her son, William; her grandson, Stephen; and her brothers, Dick, Glenn and Blair Wright.
Ruth will be remembered as a loving wife, Godly companion, sacrificial mother, superb homemaker, praying grandmother and great-grandmother, and faithful friend. Ruth was a pastor’s wife who stood in the shadows, supporting her husband in every endeavor. She emulated the Proverbs 31 virtuous woman. She was respected among many ladies in her husband’s ministries who entrusted their hearts to her wise counsel.
All who knew her will never forget her great sense of humor, her homemade noodles, her servant’s heart, and her ability of always making their house a home.
These high school sweethearts walked hand in hand through their sunset years until she joined her husband in their heavenly home.
Though our hearts are saddened by her absence, we rejoice in knowing she is with her Savior, her husband, her son, and her grandson, and we are comforted in the assurance of our heavenly reunion.
A visitation with the family will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, July 1, 2016 at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28273.
