Ronald Franklin Green, 63, husband of Sally Eckelman Green, passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at his home in Charlotte, NC following a courageous battle with cancer.
Ron was born in Oak Ridge, TN on December 27, 1947 to Doris White Green and the late Robert Lynn Green. He grew up in Paducah, KY and Oak Ridge, TN, graduating from Oak Ridge High School. He graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics, and in 1978 with his Masters of Science in Engineering Management.
Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are his much loved children, Whitney Green Smith and her husband, Brad, of Charlotte, Jessica Green and her fiancé, Tom Griffiths, of New York, NY, and Alissa Green Yeargin and her husband, Charlie, of Greenville, SC. Ron was most thrilled and blessed by his granddaughter, Sydney Elizabeth Smith.
Ron is also survived by his sister, Barbara McIntosh and her husband, Ronnie, of Paducah, KY; nephew, Deron McIntosh, his wife, Stacie, and their children, Hannah and Lucas, of Franklin, TN; niece, Julie McIntosh, of Paducah, KY; his wife’s parents, Max H. and JoAnne Eckelman; and sister-in-law, Mary Eckelman Settlemyre, her husband, Wes, and their children, Anne and Abby Settlemyre.
Ron spent his distinguished career in the power generation industry, working over 15 years with Fluor Daniel. His proudest role was as the founding President of Duke/Fluor Daniel. Until his retirement in 2008, he enjoyed success in other positions within the energy sector, including President of Duke Engineering and Services in Charlotte, NC; leading the American Centerfuge Program for US Enrichment Corp; and most recently as Chairman of Advatech, LLC. Ron also proudly served on the Board of Directors at Astec Industries, Inc. of Chattanooga, TN and Eagle Energy, Satellite Beach, FL.
Ron was an avid Tennessee Volunteer fan and credited the University of Tennessee, Knoxville for much of his professional success. In thanks and appreciation to the school, he created The Ronald F. Green Engineering Scholarship Endowment in 2005 to encourage bright young people to enter the field of engineering. He also served on the College of Engineering Board of Advisors since his appointment in 1987. In 1996, Ron was presented with the Nathan W. Dougherty Award, which is the highest honor given by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville College of Engineering for his numerous contributions to the field of engineering and the University.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the UT Foundation for the Ron Green Engineering Scholarship Endowment, College of Engineering, 120 Perkins Hall, Knoxville, TN 37996.
Visitation will be held at Harry & Bryant Co., 500 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207 on Friday, October 28th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Harry & Bryant Co. on Saturday, October 29th at 1:00 p.m. A gathering with Ron’s family will follow at Carmel Country Club.
