A native of Charlotte, Mr. Wentz was born to the late Samuel David Wentz and Osee McWhirter Wentz on January 21, 1925. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and retired as a captain with the Charlotte Fire Department after 31 years of service. Mr. Wentz coached little league baseball for the Charlotte Civitan League for many years. He was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter. Mr. Wentz was formerly a member of Belmont Park United Methodist Church and a charter member of University City United Methodist Church.
Mr. Wentz is survived by his wife Mary Conder “Bibbie” Wentz; children, Robert W. Wentz, Jr. (Cathy) of Matthews, Sandra House (Tom) of Mint Hill, Susan Elkins (Ron) of Mint Hill; sister, Bette Knight of Charlotte; grandchildren, Julie Wentz, Jill Story (Jonathan), Melissa Nichols (Stephan), Brad House (Jennifer), Wes Elkins, Tyler Elkins; great-grandchildren, Emily Nichols, Carolina Story; special brother-in-law, Bob Conder; special sisters-in-law, Joyce Helms, Betty Conder; many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 13 at University City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chad Cozad officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Thursday morning at the church.
