Charlotte - Bob Steele was a loving and self-sacrificing husband, father, grandfather and friend. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Bob dearly loved everything about his hometown to the end. He and his twin brother Jim, were born in Pittsburgh on December 24, 1922, to Jenny and William Steele, joining older siblings, Matthew “Matty” Steele, William M. “Bimmy” Steele, Mae “Sissy” Steele Sinewe and David S. Steele.
He served, with his twin brother in General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s company during WWII, including stints in London and Paris together. Following the War, he joined US Steel and worked there for 35 years, retiring in 1979. His beloved wife, Ruth Cunningham Steele, died in 1975 after a long bout with breast cancer.
Bob is survived by his older son, Douglas R. Steele (wife Laurie) and grandsons, Daniel R. Steele (wife Colleen), David H. Steele (wife Rebeca) and Mark A Steele, all of Charlotte, NC; his younger son, Reverend Donald J. Steele (wife Donna) and grandsons, Matthew J. Steele and Benjamin R. Steele, all of Summit, NJ; his sister-in-law, Delores Dougherty Steele of Harrisburg, PA; his two nieces, Margaret “Peggy” Steele Shafer of Pittsburgh, PA, Carol L. Steele of Florissant, CO; and nephew, C. Clifford Sinewe of Dayton, OH. Bob’s devotion to his family was evident, and remarkable to all who knew him.
Funeral Services and burial will be held in Pittsburgh at a later date.
