Bob was born to the late John Franklin and Inez Lineberger Sherrill on June 8, 1925 in Charlotte, NC.
Bob graduated from Central High School in the Class of 1943 where he played football. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill until he joined the service during World War II. On October 16, 1944, Bob married his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy Price.
Bob served in the 250th General Hospital Division of the Army in the European Theater. In recognition of service during the Battle of the Bulge, Bob was awarded the Bronze Star. At the conclusion of the war, Bob returned to Chapel Hill where he completed his studies, and then transferred to Penn State College of Optometry, where he graduated in 1950.
Bob opened his office in the Independence Building on the Square in Charlotte in June of 1950, later moving his practice to Central Avenue. Dr. Sherrill also had an office in Stanley, NC. Bob retired from practice in 1991 after 41 years.
Bob was very dedicated to the church. He was a member of Plaza Presbyterian Church for many years where he served as a Deacon and Elder and Youth Advisor.
In 1962, he and his wife, Dot, joined Sardis Presbyterian where he became very active, serving as an Elder, as well as chairman and member of numerous committees. He also served on the Board of the Boy Scouts.
Bob and Dot served on the organizing board of Providence Day School and was active in school activities.
Bob was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family was his pride and joy.
He enjoyed golf, traveling and spending time at Lake Norman and the beach. Bob especially enjoyed stained glass work.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Dorothy Price Sherrill; two children, David Sherrill, his wife, Bobbi, and grandsons, Jamie and Robbie; and Anne Howell, her husband, David, and step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Lisa; as well as a nephew, Jack Sherrill and his wife, Katherine, and a niece, Nancy Sherrill.
In addition to his parents, a brother, John F. Sherrill, Jr., preceded him in death.
A service to celebrate Dr. Sherrill’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 29th at Sardis Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Alice Johnson officiating. His family will receive friends at the church following the service. Private interment will be in Sharon Memorial Park.
