Born in Ardmore, Pa., on February 23, 1932, he was the only child of the late Robert Hurd Harris Sr. and Kathleen Davis Harris. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded by his two eldest children, Robert Mark Harris [wife Elaine] and Deborah Anne Seymour [husband Thomas].
Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Constance “Connie” Harris; three sons, Jeffrey Harris [wife Beth], Brian Harris [wife Joni], and Gregory Harris [wife Stacey]; twelve grandchildren, Jonathan, Katherine, Mathew, Colleen, Megan, Erin, Chrystelle, Michael, Thomas, John, Gabrielle, and Connor; seven great-grandchildren, Charles, Alice, Reagan, Isabella, Michael, Amelia and Jonah.
Following high school at Haverford Prep, Bob attended the University of Delaware. Before finishing college, he volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy where he served as a 3rd Class Petty Officer in Navy bands during the Korean Conflict. After completing his Navy service, Bob went to work for the real estate department of Fidelity Bank in Philadelphia. While supporting his family, Bob completed his degree and graduated from St. Joseph’s College with a BS in Business Administration.
In January 1969 Bob was hired away from Fidelity to establish the real estate department at Maine National Bank. He continued as Vice President of real estate until 1988 and retired to Charlotte in 1993.
Besides family, Bob’s other great passion was music. An accomplished baritone saxophone player, he was associated with various bands throughout his life including: The Jive Five (High School); Bob Harris and His Delmelodians (Delaware); various Navy bands; the Moonlighters (Philadelphia); The Don Doane Band (Portland, Maine); the CPCC Jazz Big Band and the Studio D Saxophone Quartet (Charlotte, NC.).
A loving, faithful and honorable husband, father and friend; Bob passed his love of music and his dry, low-key and infectious sense of humor on to his children and grandchildren.
A mass in memory of Robert Hurd Harris Jr. is scheduled for 1:00 pm Saturday, April 22, 2017 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 1400 Suther Road, Charlotte, NC 28213.
