Robert D. Grogan Jr., 89, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on January 30, 2013 at Levine-Dickson Hospice at Southminster after a brief hospital stay. He was born on September 13, 1923 in Atlanta, GA, the only child of the late Willie Ophelia Johnson Grogan and
Robert Davis Grogan Sr.
Bob was married to Virginia Florence Grogan, his childhood sweetheart, for 65 years. He is survived by his two daughters, Susan Dry and Pam Grogan; son-in-law, David Dry; and grandson, Chris Dry.
Bob attended Boys High in Atlanta and Georgia Tech, where he received a baseball scholarship, and was a pitcher for the Georgia Tech baseball team. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. He received the Purple Heart for injuries suffered during his tour of duty.
Bob spent his career as a manufacturer's representative, and was President of Grogan-Edwin Associates Inc. before retiring in 2003. A lover of sports, he was an accomplished golfer and a member of Myers Park County Club since 1957.
Bob and Virginia joined Myers Park United Methodist Church in 1955. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 pm on Monday, February 4, 2013 in the Francis Chapel of Myers Park United Methodist Church, with the Reverend William Roth officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Interment with military honors in the church columbarium will be private.
