Born May 4,1938 in Bessemer City, he was the son of Gettys Gladden and Thelma Wyont. Robert graduated from Bessemer City High School, then served in the US Navy, as a helicopter mechanic during the Korean War. Robert worked as a machinist at Atlantic Envelope until his retirement. He married the love of his life, Patsy (Pat) Satterfield. Together, they enjoyed traveling, cruises, square dancing and both were involved in community service. Prior to Pat’s death in 2018, he devoted all of his time in caring for her and never left her side. His dedication was unwavering. They are once again together, and what a reunion they are having.
Robert was a dedicated lifetime member of the Pineville Volunteer Fire Department and served in many capacities; the last role was as President. Robert was a devoted member of Grace Life and loved going every Sunday, until his health confined him to his home. When he could no longer attend in person, he faithfully listened to Grace Life services via the internet. Robert loved his family immensely and his greatest enjoyment was being a grandfather. He was always available to help and often offered a listening ear. He was affectionately known as “Pop” to his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was loved by many.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy, his parents, Gettys and Thelma.
Robert is survived by his son, Les (Sylvia) of Pineville, N.C. He is also survived by his sister, Billie Lail of Garner, N.C, his two grandchildren, Ryan of Pineville, Shea Crowe (Chris) of Denver, N.C., and by five great-grandchildren, Katelynn, Kacee, Kylie, Levi, and Cutler as well as many nieces and nephews.
