Robert “Bob” Leonard Fontana went to be with Our Lord on June 29, 2021. He was born on October 22, 1942 in Johnson City, NY to his parents, Reginald Fontana and Natalie Cordileone. The oldest of three brothers, Bob left Endicott, NY after high school and put himself through college at Jacksonville University, Florida.
He married the love of his life, Jo Laraine Fontana and had two children, Angel Martin (Joel) and Bob Fontana (Georgia). His love and devotion for his wife and children was apparent throughout his life. He was blessed with five grandchildren (Jody, Bobby, Zach, Victoria and Harrison) and his great-grandson, Camden.
Bob was a force to be reckoned with, and would light up a room with a joke and his infectious smile. He loved the game of golf, and whether he was playing or watching it on TV, it always brought him joy; and his children, aggravation, as they were forced to watch that instead of cartoons on the weekends. They all shared a passion for ACC basketball, but Bob had to appease his kids pulling for both Carolina and Duke. He also loved Carolina Panthers football and a great bottle of wine.
Bob was very well traveled, having been in the shoe and accessories business. He traveled all over the world for the business he loved and made many great friends in the 50+ years he worked at it. An entrepreneur at heart, he opened up his own business in the 1970’s called Boot and Shoe. He worked hard at it only to find that southern accents required translators to this NY native. Years later, he would open Fontana and Fontana, where he had great success and could finally speak fluent Southern.
Bob is predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Tommy and Danny Fontana. We feel sure they are sitting around the dinner table in heaven enjoying a bottle of wine and laughing about the many memories of their childhood.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 6th, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00 am. The family will have a private interment.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made in his honor to Memory and Movement Charlotte, which is a non-profit located at 300 Billingsley Road Suite 108, Charlotte, NC 28211.
Dr. Chaconas and his staff were incredible and provided him with exceptional care in his battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
The family would also like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Care Point and the amazing people at Hospice Charlotte Region.
