Born January 26, 1944, he is survived by his beloved wife Marsha Hagwood Murrell, and they were about to celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary on November 24th. Richard is also survived by his three daughters, Laurie Haynes (Chuck), Amy Godley (Mark) and Lindsey Murrell; two grandchildren, Callie and Ashton Godley; brother David Murrell (Linda), sister-in-law; Sandra Murrell (Philip); and extended family including many nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard was the son of the late George Warren ‘GW’ Murrell and Marybelle Thompson Murrell and brother of late sister Linda Murrell and late brother Philip Murrell.
Richard was a former member and deacon of Carmel Baptist Church for many years and played an instrumental role in the lives of his daughters and other young people in the church’s youth programs and coaching sports. He was a member of Central Church of God and he wasn’t afraid to talk about his faith or his relationship with the Lord. In fact, in many situations, including in his own personal journey through hardships and illness was, “Give it to God.” Recalling many of his words of advice, he’d also say, “Don’t stress on it, give it to the Lord and trust in Him.” Richard is often referred to as “the kindest man I’ve ever known.” He was a good friend and mentor and admired by so many.
Growing up, Richard was an excellent student, smart and skilled athlete who participated in baseball, basketball, football and track in high school. He attended Bradenton Junior College on a baseball scholarship before attending Elon College and graduating from East Carolina with a Business Administration degree. He proudly served our country in the Artillery Division of the Army National Guard Reserves.
Richard had a successful career and long tenure at Bank of America (NationsBank and North Carolina National Bank). He was considered by his peers as an outstanding professional in his field and his knowledge of commercial trust and real estate was immense. After his career with the bank, Richard started his own residential and commercial real estate and property management companies, The Murrell Company and Charlotte Residential Group, which has become a family business with two daughters. He was a well-respected broker and businessman in the Charlotte community demonstrating trust, integrity and experience.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A celebration of life gathering will be held on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 2:00pm at McEwen Funeral Home, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.
