He was a graduate of Carlisle Military School, class of ’55 with a rank of Lieutenant. While at Carlisle, he was President of his sophomore, junior and senior class and Co-Captain of the baseball team. After graduating, he served 16 months in Korea with the US Army. After his service, he spent the next 40 years working in the family business, Carolina School Supply, Co. and retired as Vice President.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 40 years, Betty Jean Phillips McNeil. He was also preceded in death by his parents; Felix and Agnes, brothers; Alan H, Frank G, Charles D, Phillip R, sisters; Peggy Walker/Cal, Lillian Galloway/Ray, Diane Shrader/Fred, nephews; Rick Walker, Reid Walker.
He is survived by his 3 children; devoted son, Steve McNeil of Gastonia, NC, daughters, Ann Brady/Shawn and Christy McNeil, both of Charlotte, NC, 2 grandchildren; Thomas Brady/Abbey of Gastonia, NC and Emma Brady of Denver, CO, 9 nieces; Leigh, Midge, Melissa, Karen, Melinda, Marilyn, Lisa, Felicia and Sherry, along with 2 nephews; Gordon and Greg.
Richard will be remembered for his love of family, golf, Atlanta Braves baseball, Duke basketball and his daily dose of Gunsmoke!
To say farewell to our beloved Daddy/Grandpa, we would like to quote the Bible passage from the second Letter of Timothy: “For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:6-8
A private graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn West. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
