In her own words, Peggy was a “tough old broad” who was full of grit, grace, love, and an adventurous spirit.
She was a graduate of McDowell High School, and after working for many years, she rededicated herself to her education. While working full time, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Accounting at Gardner Webb University. After that, she worked as an accountant for Carolina Tape and Supply in Hickory until she retired.
From the time she was a little girl, Peggy was always fascinated by reading and learning. She loved to read and had an extraordinary library of books in her home. Additionally, she was an avid gardener, loved the outdoors, and felt most at peace at the beach. During retirement she enjoyed traveling and going on cruises with her “80s Ladies.”
Peggy always loved music and even snuck out with friends to see Chuck Berry in Charlotte when she was a teenager. Years later, she had that same excitement when she took her daughter to see Elvis in Asheville in 1975. She passed this love of music to her family, and all family occasions involved good food, nice decorations, and great music.
She wore many hats during her lifetime: daughter, sister, mom, friend, but to her grandsons and many loving friends and family, she was affectionately known as “Nana.” One of her most cherished roles was her role as a mother. She had an inseparable bond with her daughter, Tammy, and they made a formidable team. They were a force to be reckoned with when it came to everything - cooking, planning holiday meals, gardening, decorating, and, most importantly, loving their family.
Peggy had a servant’s heart. Many who knew her could share a story of how she helped them during their time of need. Whether it was through actions, kind words, or just providing a listening ear, Peggy was always there for those she loved.
She loved to spoil her grandchildren, daughter, or anyone else for birthdays or special occasions by making them their favorite meal - from scratch. She endured much in her life, but always kept her sense of humor, positive outlook, and faith.
Peggy is survived by her grandsons: Tyrell Jason Siler (Jill) of Harrisburg, Justin Antonio Siler (Nereyda) of Cornelius; great-granddaughters: Jayla, Sadie, and Harper; siblings: Julia Mitzi Duncan, Katie Davis, and Chuck Wright (Melissa), and numerous special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Tammy King; siblings: Hazel Fender, Charlotte Swafford, Deborah Woods, and John Robert Wright.
The family will host a Celebration of Life reception at 5:00 on Saturday, October 8 at Station 80, 2050 US 70-West, Marion, NC 28752.
