Wednesday August 28, 2019.
Peggy was born to parents Les and Alice on August 27, 1941 in Elizabeth City, NC.
She grew up as the eldest of four and graduated from Bittburg High School in
Germany.
She discovered miniatures in the 1970s and was accomplished at creating
beautiful dolls, clothes, and room boxes that she shared generously with family and
friends. She always loved birds and spent much of her retirement watching the many
birds that visited her feeders every day. A compassion for people and animals made
her home a haven for whoever who needed a meal or a place to stay, whether they had
two legs or four.
She was a second mother to her sisters and brother who will miss her love and
guidance. Her nieces and nephews remember her as someone who “was always
prepared to impart life’s knowledge, no matter how trivial or grand”. She was able to
capture the attention of children with trinkets, miniatures, and things that interested
them, always encouraging exploration and learning. She taught her daughters
independence and compassion and imparted her love of animals and nature at an early
age.
Peggy is survived by her daughters Wendy Rhames and Heidi Diegelman and
son-in-law Glenn Diegelman; her sisters Marguerite Moore and AJ Coutu;
brothers-in-law Terry Moore, Steven Coutu, and Richard Baker; sisters-in-law Kathy
Rice and Hanan DeLorenzo, and all her beloved nieces and nephews and grandnieces
and grandnephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ken Long; brother
James DeLorenzo; sisters-in-law Cheryl Baker and Jean Long; and her brother-in-law
Gary Long.
The family would like to thank Harris Hospice Unit at Presbyterian Novant Main
Hospital for their care and compassion.
A celebration of life memorial is scheduled for September 8 from 2-4pm. Details on
venue are to follow. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Peggy's life.
