Paul DeWitt Redfern, 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 31, 2020. As a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, he will be greatly missed by those who loved him. He was born on September 29, 1928 to Neal Warren and Rosalie Redfern and grew up in Peachland, NC. On June 24, 1950 he married his sweetheart, Corinne Haigler of Marshville, NC, at a ceremony at her parents’ home. They moved to Charlotte, where Paul loved living in the “big city” and, according to Corinne, wanted to go out every night to eat or to the movies. When Doug was born in 1954, they moved into their home on Academy Street where they lived for 62 years and raised their family and grew close to their neighbors.
Paul enjoyed his profession of driving trucks, working at Central Motor Lines for most of his career, and he was very proud of his accident-free record. He and Corinne were faithful members of Plaza Baptist Church and embraced the members there as family. Paul enjoyed working on lawn mowers, fixing the neighborhood kids’ bikes, eating popcorn and playing school and barbershop with his grandkids. He loved the beach, and many of the happiest family memories involved playing with him in the sand and waves. Whether he was known as Paul, DeWitt, Daddy, Paw-Paw, Grandpa, or Uncle Deke, he was well loved by the people in his life.
The family would like to thank Clear Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation in Mint Hill for the sweet care given to Paul this last year and a half. We also thank everyone for their prayers, love, concern, and encouragement over the last few years. Since Corinne passed away in December 2016, Paul has been missing her and looking forward to their reunion in heaven. We celebrate that he is in the presence of God and together once more with his “Corny.”
Paul is survived by his three children: Doug Redfern (Jackie) of Mint Hill, NC, Paulette Tandy (Richard) of Las Vegas, NV and Nancy Janes (Geoffrey) of Monroe, NC. He loved playing with children, and his seven grandchildren (Lynn Myrick, Ann Mullis, Matt Tandy, Tiffany Barrett, Kara Janes, Garren Janes and Kelsey Janes) and seven great-grandchildren (Rachael Wondracek, Zachary Wondracek, Logan Tandy, Emily Tandy, Brock Barrett, Colter Barrett and Brooke Barrett) were the lights of his life.
Family was important to Paul and he greatly loved his and Corinne’s family. He is survived by his sister Juanita Williams and his sisters- and brothers-in-law Eleanor Horne, Doris Haigler, Roy (Jodie) Haigler, Polly Haigler, Jimmy (Julia) Haigler and many nephews and nieces. Paul is preceded in death by his brother and wife, Pete & Frances Redfern, sister and husband Jake & Reba Killian and brothers-in-law Gene Williams, Edward Haigler, Carroll Haigler and Truby Horne.
A graveside celebration service respecting social distancing will be held on Thursday, August 6 at 10:30am at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd, Charlotte, NC 28212, with Pastor David A. Gales, Sr. officiating. Enter the Park from Sharon Amity Road and the service will be in the back corner. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Plaza Baptist Church, 3321 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28205.
