

Paul was born October 5, 1932 to Paul Murphy O’Bar and Dart Minter O’Bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School; the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity; and the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, where he was elected to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He performed his internship at Bellevue hospital in NYC, where he met his future wife, Margaret (Peg) O’Reilly. He returned to Oklahoma for his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center. From 1961-63 he served in the U.S. Navy as Lt. Commander. In Tucson, Arizona, he conducted research at the Veterans Administration Hospital, and was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. In 1970 he moved to Charlotte to become the first local infectious disease specialist, joining the former Nalle Clinic. Paul worked tirelessly to care for his patients, and was grateful for the many personal and professional friendships he made. He retired from practice in 1997.
Paul was a kind and caring person who touched many lives, and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Peg; children, Paul, Julie (Baity) and Laura; grandchildren, Sean and Emma Baity; half-brother, Robert, (Neva Marie), of Oklahoma; and special cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2011 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road, with the Reverend Francis O’Rourke, Celebrant.
The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the Mass. A private inurnment will be held at Forest Lawn East.
