Nick M Stavrakas, 74, passed away on March 24, 2021 at Atrium Health University following the onset of a sudden illness. He was born on November 13,1946 in Charlotte, NC to the late Robert G and Ann M Stavrakas. Nick was the oldest of nine siblings.
Mr. Stavrakas attended grammar school at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church and Charlotte Catholic High School where he was a standout student and an all County football player. Nick graduated in 1964 and entered college at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. While there Nick played on the first basketball team that the 49ers fielded in competition and also proudly made the Deans List.
After graduating from UNCC Nick entered Clemson University where he obtained his Masters and Doctorate degrees in his beloved field of Mathematics. Upon graduating, Dr. Stavrakas became one of the first alumni hired by UNCC as a full time faculty member in the math department. He retired from this position in 2015 after 43 years tenured Professor.
Nick’s life after retirement centered around his desire to take it easy and enjoy life on his terms. He loved doing research on his computer and building them as well. Nick enjoyed going to the VFW and watching TV series of long ago TV like Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and The Prisoner to name a few. He loved being in his home doing his own thing!
Nick is survived by his son Mark and his wife Heather; grandson Jack and his companion of many years Catherine Grieco-Reeves. Also left behind to cherish and remember him with great affection are his brothers Robert (Pam) and John (Gina); sisters Nancy Keetch (Rodney), Lynn Bumgardner (Bill) and Nona Stavrakas; many nieces, nephews, cousins and an abundance of friends. Mr Stavrakas was also preceded in death by his brothers Bill, David and sister Dolly Jackson.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at St John Neumann Catholic Church, 8451 Idlewild Road, Charlotte with visitation beginning at 10am with a Mass of Christion burial following at 11am.
Flowers should be sent directly to the church and condolences can be mailed to 7722 Batavia Lane, Charlotte, NC 28213.
