I grew up in Our Lady of Assumption parish & have many memories of suppers in the basement.  I also attended UNCC where Dr Stravakas  taught an Algebra class that I needed prior to graduating.   He was a brilliant man & instructor.  He taught me that if you can explain a problem to one person & then encourage that person to explain it to others more people will understand.  I have used that lesson throughout my career.    I wish the family peace.  God Bless

Nick and I had many happy moments when we were both in the Math Department. After I left to join the Computer Science Department, we continued our association. Nick had a tremendous ability to start, lead, and bring a conversation to a close as and when he saw fit. His sense of humor was penetrating and to the  point, and always on target. He never forget to ask about family and others who had left with me to form the new CS Department.

My condolences to the family.  In the late 70's, I served with Greg and John (Nick's brother), in the 3rd Armored Division in Germany.  It was Greg who introduced me to Nick and I rented a room in Nick's house.  Nick drove me to my job interviews, and did everything he could to help me get my civilian life started.  He introduced me to his very welcoming family; his mother and father, Nona his sister, and Mark his son, all great people. Greg, Nick, and John set a standard for me on how a person is to treat people as you go through life.  One I've endeavored to live up to.  I live in California now, but was in Charlotte a little over a year ago and was able to see Nick.  At that time he was doing very well, so his passing comes as a shock.  Nick's professorship at UNCC contributed extensively to the Charlotte community.  Nick, like his father, are the generations that are the foundation for the Charlotte you see today.  It saddens me that I was only able to thank Nick for his contribution to my life; I was never able to repay him.  Nick and his family will always be in my heart and memories.  

I knew Nick all his life!  My parents and his parents were friends.  His  parents and uncles and aunts ran the Ringside Grill on E 4th St where our family visited many times over the years.  Even as a kid, I remember the food as being excellent!
Though we didn't see each other often, we did both go to UNC Charlotte and got reacquainted.   Those were great years.  I was very active at the University over the years and would run into Nick occasionally.
My deepest sympathy and condolences go to the family.

My Sincerest Condolences to the Nickolas 'Nick' Stavrakas family, recall 'Nick' very well from Our Years at Charlotte Catholic High School, from September 1960 until graduation in June 1964. Followed Nick some what in the newspapers over the years after graduation and many life events to this day! May the "Old Football playing mathematician (Professor), "Dr. Nickolas!" Rest now! Recall the times We all used to have with classmates, who were "Friends," especially at Charlotte Catholic Cougars football jocks, watched playing  wherever "We" played, no matter what the local weather was like that day (night games), and traveling on the "sponsored game bus to those events!" Ol' Nick was one of those "Good People" one always recalls, all their lives! May he rest in peace now! No more 'Math' problems!  John G. O'Connell, III, Taylors (SC) 

Nick and I were 8th graders together at Assumption and 9th graders at Charlotte Catholic before the school was divided.  
We shared a special fondness for our 8th grade teacher, Sr. Mary Brigid, who remains a dear friend of mine to this day.

Our deepest condolences to the family of Nick Stavrakas.  His friends at VFW Post 1160 on Central Avenue will miss the times that we spent talking to Nick and listening to his music on the jukebox. Nick always had great taste and diversity in music. He was a life time Auxiliary Member, Officer and friend to all. He also was always willing to help out with projects when they came up. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.
