Nancy Louise Hawley, 84, of Charlotte, died peacefully at TerraBella Senior Living Community on March 22, 2025 after a slow battle with Alzheimer’s disease for more than two decades. She is now reunited with her late husband, John Hawley, in Heaven.
Nancy was born on December 29, 1940 in Pelzer, S.C. to Lee and Bertha Spearman. Nancy attended Greer High School from 1955 to 1959. She then married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Henderson, and had two daughters. She was remarried on February 28, 1971 to John Hawley, the love of her life, and remained by his side until his passing in 2016.
Although Nancy and John both lived in many different cities, they settled in Matthews, N.C. Nancy had an infectious personality, she was known for her hearty laugh and kind heart and everyone who knew her called her a friend. She and John enjoyed square dancing, trips to the beach, and were active members of Blair Road United Methodist Church. Throughout her life, Nancy loved to sew and even had her own successful business for many years as a seamstress making window treatments. She had many interests, from clothes and fashion, to birdwatching and crossword puzzles.
Most of all, Nancy’s family was the pride and joy of her life. Affectionately known as “Gramma” to her family, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Nancy spent the last decade of her life at TerraBella Senior Living Community, where she was a staff favorite and known to many as “Fancy Nancy.”
Nancy is survived by her daughter Tina and husband Steve McDaniel; daughter Carla and husband Roy Covington III; daughter Cheryl and husband Joe Pogonowski; son Jay and wife Barbara Hawley; and sixteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Amy, Travis, Jennifer, Natalie, Caitlin, John, Christopher, Jacob, Haiden, Bailey, Zoe, Jack, Erin, Kennedy, Ethan, Collins, Brian, and Enya.
