Mona was the sixth of seven children born to Rose and Edmund Downie and resided in Trinidad, British West Indies. On Monday, February 13, 2023 she would have celebrated her 100th birthday.
While working for the United States Air Force at Waller Field, she met her beloved husband, Lieutenant Charles Otto Brahler, a Naval Officer. They moved to Washington, D.C. in 1945, where they lived and raised their three daughters. In 1973, they retired to Myrtle Beach, S.C. and later to Charlotte, N.C. Together they enjoyed gardening, traveling and entertaining their family and friends.
Mona went on to sell real estate. She pursued a lifetime interest in sewing, making beautiful clothes for herself as well as the wedding dress that was worn by two of her daughters and one of her granddaughters. She also received great pleasure from cooking, oil painting and the companionship of her dogs.
She is survived by daughters, Betty Wells, Charlotte Lawrence and Kathy Vlaich; grandchildren, Laura Hunter (Ralph), Alyson Michaud (John) and Morgan McAllister (Matt); and great grandchildren, Owen, Parks and Liza Hunter; as well as her sister, Joyce Bonner.
A service to celebrate Mona’s life will be held on Friday, February 10, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, Charlotte, N.C. A Committal will be held at the St. John’s Church columbarium following the service. The family will receive friends following the Committal.
