Indian Trail – Mrs. Mildred Lewis Helms “Mickey”, age 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at Novant Harris Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Caldwell County on December 15, 1936 to the late Thurman S. Lewis and Wilma Hurley Lewis. She was married to Thomas Washington “Tom” Helms for 64 years. Mickey was preceded in death by her sons, Jeffrey Thomas Helms, and Kelly Wayne Sipes. In addition to her sons, she was also preceded in death by her sisters, Inez Lewis Booth, and Eurline Lewis Martin.
Mickey was a faithful member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church where she and Tom worked with the Youth and the Church Produce Market. She retired from Mecklenburg Radiology after 21 years of service. She was an avid reader, enjoyed the beach, and loved shopping. One of her favorite things to do was going with Tom to car shows and cruise-ins. She valued spending time with friends and dining with them at Penny’s Restaurant in Oakboro at the monthly cruise-ins.
Mickey cherished her family and friends. She exhibited genuine faith in her savior, Jesus Christ, and is rejoicing with Him today. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Those left to cherish her memory, in addition to her husband, include her brother, J. R. Lewis, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mickey’s life will be held at Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 6701 Idlewild Rd, Charlotte, NC 28212 on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Santosh Niroula, Pastor Sarah Kalish, and Rev. Gary Waters officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service in the Church Sanctuary. Burial will follow immediately after the service at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 8901 Lawyers Rd, Mint Hill, NC 28227.
The family requests that memorials be made to Cokesbury United Methodist Church Discretionary Fund, 6701 Idlewild Rd, Charlotte, NC 28212.
