Michael Derrick Helms of Charlotte NC passed away February 20, 2022 at his home surrounded by loved ones. His battle with serious medical issues in the last number of years showed his courage in facing life’s challenges with a smile.
He was born in Charlotte, NC on July 16, 1949. Mike was a lifelong resident of Charlotte. He graduated from Harding High School in 1967. He entered the US Air Force and proudly served his country from 1969 to 1974. Mike served as a crew chief as part of search and rescue during the Vietnam War.
Mike worked in the metal finishing industry. He was the self-employed owner of American Finishing Company and later Hog n’ Dog Catering.
Mike was a proud American who had a passion for life and enjoyed many interests and hobbies. He had a great sense of humor, wit and charm. Mike was known for telling some great stories. He loved fishing, motorcycle riding, marksmanship, creating and building things, watching football and most of all cooking.
Mike loved sharing his incredible food throughout the years with friends and family. He was an animal lover and we often joked how we wanted to come back as one of Mike’s pets. His faithful dog Buddy was always at his side. Mike loved having a beer and a bourbon with friends. He was a good friend to many people. Mike had such a big heart, before his illness Mike was always one of the first to jump in to help others.
Mike touched many hearts in his life here on earth. He will be deeply missed and remembered by so many.
He was preceded in death by his parents James E Helms and Lorraine Helms and nephew Jonathan Helms.
Mike is survived by his partner of 35 years Debbie Chambers; son Michael Helms Jr. (Kendra); grandson Brayden Michael Helms; brother Roger Anthony Helms (Carolyn); nephews Nicolas Helms, Joshua Chambers (Elizabeth) and Gregory Chambers (Janine); numerous cousins and longtime friends.
A memorial service will be held at McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, March12, 2022 at 2pm. The family will receive friends after the service.
