Mary Helen Smith

Mary Helen, or MH, was born on July 13, 1931 in Wise County Virginia. Her parents were William White Barrowman and Maxie G Meade Barrowman. Mary Helen was predeceased by her parents, her older brother Joseph Thomas Barrowman, her sister Nita Mae Stewart, her nephew Joe Edward Barrowman, and all of her aunts and uncles. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Donna Stephenson, aged 5½.

MH was a trained artist and enjoyed doing portraits as a hobby. She was also a certified handwriting analyst, a certified estate planner, and a licensed registered representative for stocks and variable annuities. She was employed by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, MONY, and she eventually retired from the North Carolina Revenue Department.

She belonged to the Opera Guild of Charlotte, Sardis Wood Garden Club, Mecklenburg County Garden Club, Ikebana International, the Iris Society, and the Mecklenburg Evening Republican Women’s Club. She was also a flower show judge at one time.

She was survived by her daughter Beverly Stephenson Duncan, her son-in-law David Paul Siegel, her grandson Sean Duncan and his wife, Octaviana Asamasama Hemy, and their son Lucas. Surviving relatives also include her three brothers, William Raymond, Edward Donald, and Charles Bruce Barrowman.

A funeral service for Mary will be held Friday, July 14, 2023 at 12 noon at McEwen Funeral Service-Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210, followed by a reception afterwards.

A committal service will occur Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Woodmere Memorial Park, 2701 Washington Blvd, Huntington, WV 25705.
