She was born June 11, 1929 on the family farm in Fort Mill. Her parents were Charles Pruett and Sadie Kimbrell Blankenship. Despite the hard times, she had many happy memories of growing up through the depression and WWII. She graduated in 1946 from Fort Mill High School and attended Winthrop College. In 1945, she saw a handsome young soldier just home from the war walk into Flint Hill Baptist Church in his Army uniform. She decided then that Joe Moss was who she would marry, and in 1950, she did. They moved just across the state line and made a home in Steele Creek. You could find her working in the garden, canning, cooking, and playing with the grandchildren well into her 80s. Sunday lunch after church at Grandmother’s was a weekly tradition. While she enjoyed trips to town, shopping and traveling, she was always glad to get back to the peace and quiet on the farm.
Flint Hill was a vital part of her life and she was especially close to her church family. In 1950, she began serving as the organist there and continued for over 60 years, finally retiring in 2015. She always considered playing the organ to be her way of worshipping her Lord, and remembered several instances of playing for the wedding and funeral of the same person.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Moss, brothers Charlie and Jon H. Blankenship, and sister Jane Blankenship Whitley. Survivors include her son Mark Moss, wife Amy, of Richburg SC, and their children Emily Moss and fiancé AJ Barfield, Rebecca Moss and fiancé Will Cox; her son Joe Moss, wife Lee also of Richburg, and their children Joby Moss and his wife Stephanie Stanley Moss of Lowell AR, daughter Caroline Moss Catoe and her husband John Catoe of Charleston SC, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A traditional funeral service is planned for April 14 at Flint Hill Baptist Church, 269 Flint Hill Rd, Fort Mill SC at 3:00 pm. The family looks forward to greeting friends following the service. Memorials may be made to Flint Hill.
