Charlotte - Mrs. Francis, 99, died peacefully at her home at Aldersgate UMRC, Saturday, November 8, 2014. She was born August 10, 1915 in Richmond, VA to Virginia Miller Crowder and Ross Puette. She attended Richmond schools and was in the first graduating class of Thomas Jefferson High School. She attended Randolph Macon Women’s College for one year and then transferred to the University of Richmond where she received a BS degree in 1936. She married Garland Scott Francis and moved to Charlotte in 1938.
Mrs. Francis was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for many years, was a teacher and member of the Ruth Fisher Sunday School Class, a president of the United Methodist Women, a circle chairman for forty years, and an honorary member of the Administrative Board. She was given an honorary doctorate by Pfeiffer University. She served on numerous boards, including the American Red Cross, YWCA, Elon Homes for Children, Florence Crittenton Home, Charlotte Museum of History, Queens University, Pfeiffer University, the Duke Mansion, and the Board of Visitors of Aldersgate. She belonged to the Charlotte Debutante Club, Battle of Charlotte Chapter of the DAR, DeBordieu Country Club, O’Henry Book Club and Charlotte Country Club.
Mrs. Francis was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 62 years, her sister, Lucille Puette Giles, and her daughter, Maxine Miller Francis Forrest. She is survived by her son, Ross Howell Francis and his wife, Guynn of Charlotte; grandchildren, Mary Graham Forrest of Shelby, NC, Russell Hobson Forrest of Awendaw, SC, James Scott Francis of Charlotte, and Virginia Miller Francis of Jacksonville, NC; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care given by her caregivers, Tammy Bridges, Remonia Bridges, and Terrie Sigmon. They would also like especially to thank Gloria Ann Little for 22 years of dedicated and loving service.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Myers Park United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. James Howell officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends in Jubilee Hall following the service.
