Mary Ann Byers passed away on Thursday, November 25th, 2016 at her home. She was in the company of her loving and devoted husband, Billy. Born in Charlotte on September 30th, 1936, she was the daughter the late James White of Manassas, VA and the late Grace Wofford Dobbins of Ranlo, NC. Following graduation from Appalachian State University in Boone, Mary Ann began her 40-year career with Bell South Company as an operator. She retired from the telephone company as an accomplished executive, at one point in her career having been one of the highest level female executives within the ranks of Bell South.
An avid reader, she volunteered at the public library in downtown Charlotte for many years after retirement. She later taught water aerobics at the YMCA and worked part-time at a family-owned bakery where she enjoyed the interaction with the public, and where her magnetic personality made her the consistent top salesperson. Mary Ann was a friend and mentor to all who knew her. Classy, witty; she was genuine to a fault, and had a laugh that would light up the room.
She is survived by her husband, William McKnot Byers; two sons, Scott Myers of Sarasota, FL and Kerry Myers of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Barbara; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and Petie and Annie, her two Himalayan kitties. A service to remember Mary Ann’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 4th in McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road. The family will receive friends following the service. Condolences may be offered at www.mcewenpinevillechapel.com.
