She has been reunited in Heaven with her loving husband of nearly 50 years, Wallace Lee Lockamy; her parents, Minor and Blanche Lentz; and her sister, Becky Mitchell.
The youngest of three children, Mary Ann was born on March 9, 1940 in Statesville, NC. She grew up on a cotton farm in the country, and attended public school in Statesville, eventually graduating from Cool Springs High School with the class of 1958. When she was young, Mary Ann worked some, namely at a credit union and a local daycare, but she was primarily focused on being a homemaker.
Following graduation, Mary Ann met her husband, Wallace, while he was visiting Statesville during a Navy leave. The two were married in the spring of 1961, when Mary Ann was 21, and they welcomed their first child, a son, later that year.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Wallace’s work as a diesel mechanic led the new family to relocate to Charlotte in 1964. After moving into their new home and settling into the neighborhood, Wallace and Mary Ann joined Shady Brook Baptist Church. Mary Ann was a devoted and involved member of the church; she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, participated in the Women’s Mission Union, and, as a sports lover, she even played on the church’s softball team.
In the early 1970s, Mary Ann began working as a Tax Preparer at H&R Block. She quickly became quite adept in her role, so when Wallace started his own mechanic business, it was only natural for her to handle the books and other administrative duties as a side project. In the mid-2010s, after 45 years of dedicated employment, Mary Ann retired from H&R Block.
Over the years, Mary Ann took many memorable vacations with her family; she loved going to Ocean Isle Beach and searching for shells with Wallace and their children, and, one year she went on an exciting trip to the Netherlands, Germany, and France.
At home, Mary Ann enjoyed crafting, gardening, and canning, and she was a fantastic cook and baker. After taking a cake making and decorating class when her children were young, she was inspired to continue the hobby by making beautiful cakes almost weekly. She became so skilled that she even made two of her children’s’ wedding cakes.
Fondly nicknamed “Little General” by her family, Mary Ann was a naturally competitive and passionate leader. Her spunky nature and drive to win showed up in most everything she did, and especially when she enjoyed a fun card game with friends and family.
To Mary Ann, family was everything. Her life revolved around spending time with, and caring for, the people she loved most in the world. She will be dearly missed.
Those left to honor Mary Ann’s memory include her children, Mark Lockamy (Debbie), Todd Lockamy (Jerri), and Leslie Lockamy; her grandsons, TJ Lockamy, Jay Lockamy, and Jacob Lockamy; her brother, James Lentz; and her sister-in-law, Myra Faircloth.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 5:00pm until 9:00pm on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte.
The funeral service is to be conducted at 10:00am on Friday, October 14, 2022 in the Paul Helton Chapel at the funeral home, where Pastor Wade Huntsinger is to officiate.
The burial will follow at Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary Ann’s name to Hospice and Palliative Care – Charlotte Region or the Alzheimer’s Association.
