Martha Lawing Caskey

Martha Lawing Caskey, 92, passed away on January 7, 2014, one day short of her 93rd birthday. She died peacefully at the Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster in Charlotte, while holding her daughter’s hand. Martha was a native Charlottean and lived in the city until her move to the Dorchester Independent Living in Pineville a few years ago.

Martha was the middle child of seven children, born to J.T.A. Lawing and Myra Goodman Lawing. She married Albert “AJ” Caskey, Jr. and they had one daughter, Leigh. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and her husband.

After attending Central High School, Martha worked in the offices of Belk’s Department Store, Paramount Pictures, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, and Ruth’s Salads. After she retired, she cared for young children and was happier than she ever was in her working years. Her own grandchildren, Ian and Hillary, brought her tremendous happiness, and her great-granddaughter, Lily, was the ultimate joy of her life over the last two years.

Martha is survived by her daughter, Leigh Caskey Webb, and her grandchildren: Ian Webb and wife Suzyn Smith Webb, of McLean, Virginia, and Hillary Webb Fulghum and husband Hogan Fulghum and daughter Lily Grace Fulghum, of Charlotte.

The family would like to thank all of their friends who have shown love and support for Martha, with special thanks to her former son-in-law Barry Webb and to her friend and caregiver Barb Richter.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 2pm in the chapel of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, North Carolina. Martha was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s and the chapel was a favorite place for her, as it is furnished with pieces from the former church building where she was was baptized, confirmed and married.
