Mark spent his entire life in Charlotte, growing up in the close-knit neighborhood of Westchester where he made many of his life-long friends. In 1982, he graduated from Harding High School.
A master mechanic, Mark knew everything there was to know about engines, and he enjoyed practicing his trade at several Charlotte-area automotive centers. His friends, family, and customers considered him the “go to” professional for all of their car issues.
On May 19, Mark left the house to pick up lunch for his parents never to return. He had a massive stroke that caused excessive bleeding in his brain. He passed away peacefully at 5:00 pm on May 20, 2021.
While Mark’s untimely death is tragic for his family and friends, one last act of kindness has lessened their pain, as Mark was an organ donor. LifeShare Carolinas was able to find matches for both of Mark’s kidneys within 24 hours of his passing—and his liver was donated to science.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, James Donald Shaffner; his maternal grandparents, Bryte “Nanny” Little and William “Papaw” Little; and his paternal grandparents, Elizabeth “Granny” Moore and June Elijah Shaffner.
He is survived by his parents, Ann Little Duncan and Randy Morris Duncan of Davidson; his son Caleb Wesley Shaffner of Charlotte; his siblings, James Robert Shaffner (Melanie) of Concord, Kimberly Shaffner Jones of Monroe, and Wendy Duncan Smith of Mooresville.
Mark was very much beloved by his many nieces and nephews, Logan Ann Hepler, Cody Leigh Hepler (Brittany), Haley Ann Shaffner, Savannah Leigh Jones, Alexis Faith Smith, Cameron Elizabeth Shaffner, Seth Edward Jones, and Duncan Bradley Smith. He will be greatly missed by his two great nephews, Luke Wesley Hepler and Rhett William Hepler.
