Marguerite Mayberry Miller

Marguerite Mayberry Miller, 84, formerly of Binghamton/Endicott, NY, passed away on January 30, 2021, with her family by her side in Charlotte, NC and is now in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She was born in 1936 to the late Norman “Matty” and Vera Mott, in New York City, New York. Marguerite was a miracle baby as she was born prematurely at 7 months and weighed only 1 pound at a time when special equipment was not available to help premature babies survive. She was so small her mother used a small handkerchief as a diaper. God most certainly had plans for her. Marguerite answered to many names a.k.a. Peg, Peggy, Meg, Margaret, Mags but to most she was “Maggie.” She was an only child and cherished spending time with her parents and extended family, especially at her Aunt Hattie’s farm in upstate New York. She had an artistic flair and enjoyed drawing but also had a special love for helping people.

She graduated from Binghamton North High School in 1954. She met her late husband, Arthur Miller, in Buffalo, NY while attending nursing school. They married in 1961, lived in Buffalo and had three children within 15 months of each other; Darrell and DeLayce (twins) and Pamela. The family moved in 1966 to Binghamton, NY to assist her mother, Vera (also a nurse) running Mott’s Rest Home on the west side of Binghamton until the early 70’s. Maggie was a Licensed Practical Nurse for most of her career. She took a break to sell real estate in the ‘70s but gravitated back to her love of nursing. She worked in hospitals, doctor’s offices and nursing homes but her real passion was her work as a private duty nurse. She enjoyed the one on one interaction she had with her patients and it showed in the exceptional care she gave to each and every one of them.

After her husband Arthur passed away in 1982 at the early age of 46, she moved to Florida to care for her mother until her passing in 1993. She moved back to New York and spent most of her retired years in Binghamton and Endicott. During that time she was very active with her church family volunteering, participating and teaching women’s bible study classes. Maggie was always ready and willing to help others if they needed medical advice, care or assistance getting to and from doctors appointments, grocery shopping or spending time visiting friends in nursing homes. She never hesitated to help someone in need even with her own physical challenges. She was also a great listener and a friend to many and enjoyed giving hugs and kisses; you could not get passed her without receiving a smile and a hug. She loved hosting friends in her home playing pinochle, dominoes, and other card games. Her love of animals was evident by her compassion and kindness to stray cats, feeding and taking them in as well as adopting from local shelters (something her daughter Pamela is also very passionate about). She visited and volunteered at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah; one of the largest no-kill animal sanctuaries in the U.S.

Maggie is survived by three children: Darrell Miller, Tampa, FL, DeLayce Hudak (spouse Larry), of Charlotte, NC and Pamela Gallagher (spouse Dean), of Volcano, HI . She is also survived by three grandchildren (Matthew Hudak (Kelly), Melissa Hudak, Mark Hudak (Sarah) and one great-granddaughter (Emma) and another great-granddaughter on the way in April, all of Charlotte, NC.

A Funeral Service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday at 1:00pm at the First Baptist Church of Johnson City, 1321 Reynolds Road, Johnson City. Burial will be held in Vestal Hills Memorial Park following the service. The family will receive friends on Friday at 12:00pm until the time of the service at the First Baptist Church of Johnson City.
