Born to Evelyn Smith (Porter) and Jack Smith in 1934 in Brooklyn N.Y. Lois was the youngest of three children, sister Helen and brother Elliott. Lois made friends easily and was best friends for over fifty years with Catherine St. Clair, Nancy Holz and Pat Di Guida. She graduated from Shore Rd. High School in 1952. In 1954 she married Robert (Bob) Anderson Jr. and were married for forty three years before his passing in 1997. They had one son Robert Anderson III in 1954 and a daughter Susan followed in 1956.
Lois grew up not knowing any of her fathers family and he never spoke of them. After Jack passed away in 1977 a letter was found dated sometime in the 1930's requesting proof of his birth. The letter was sent to Westfield, N.C. In the summer of 1977 the Anderson family hit the road to find Lois's relatives. We pulled into a general store and asked if they knew Nannie Flippen, Jack's older sister. After a little hesitation a call was made directions were given and up the road we went. We pulled up the drive and were greeted a little apprehensively, after a few questions we were invited in and my mother met her aunt. That weekend she met aunts, uncles and cousins. Her dad had changed his name to Smith when he got to New York City but was born Claude Bagby Flippen.
In 1965 the family moved to the suburbs of Long Island in the town of Floral Park. Being a Brooklyn girl the move was initially an adjustment but she quickly made friends once again. She enjoyed doing ceramics and spending warm summer nights on the patio with friends and a few refreshing adult beverages. A little later in life everyone took up golf and would take trips as a group. The good times, stories and beer flowed.
Lois worked for twenty years as a receptionist for the first HMO on Long Island, Community Health Program. In the mid 80's along with Joe and Catherine St. Clair they bought a condo in Vero Beach playing golf and making new friends once again. After on particularly cold N.Y. winter the made a permanent move to Vero Beach. Here Lois played golf and learned how to play bridge.
Unfortunately her husband Bob passed away after a brief illness. It was at this time she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which over time took away her ability to play golf and eventually losing functional use of her hands. In 2014 she and her daughter Susan moved to Charlotte NC to be near her son, so she could be provided the increasing care she needed. Her daughter Susan lived with her and provided the day to day care which we are forever grateful.
Lois is survived by her son Robert Anderson, PharmD and wife Holly Anderson, PharmD, Daughter Susan and nieces and nephews
