Mrs. Lillian Roberta Jones Martin, age 96 of Charlotte, passed away Monday morning, March 20, 2017 at Brookdale South Park in Charlotte, NC. Lillian was born May 6, 1920 in Asheville, North Carolina, a daughter of the late William Moody Jones and Dessie Myrtle “Mam” Ballard Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. J. Clyde Martin, retired.
On April 1, 2017, visitation will be held at 10:00 AM at Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service at 5301 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, NC 28212-3611. At 11:00 the service will be officiated by Rev. G. Thomas Tate, pastor of Plaza Presbyterian Church. The graveside service will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212.
Being the wife of a military officer resulted in lots of military moves. Lillian frequently had to gather her children, pack up and move. The family lived in North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Germany, Alabama, Kansas, California, Philippines, and Colorado. Her theme song was Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere”. On more than one occasion the family would wake up and ask, “Where are we?” She worked as a salesperson in Raleigh at Belk’s, then as a postal clerk at Appalachian State University’s post office. She was a charter and lifetime member of the Star of the Redwoods Chapter - Order of the Eastern Star # 219 in Mint Valley, California. She was an active member of Plaza Presbyterian Church and the Covenant Sunday School Class. Her one of a kind creamed-style corn and delectable pound cakes quickly disappeared at church suppers and bazaars. She was a dedicated, loving mother who even lived in England for three months to take care of one of her grandsons while the parents worked on a special assignment. Her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to dote on them by taking them swimming, to parks, playing board games, reading to them, attending out of town recitals, playing video games (tried hard, but never won), cooking for them and much more. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
She is survived by her sons, Richard E. Martin and wife Patty of Colorado Springs, CO, J. Ron Martin and wife Carolyn of Charlotte, NC, Dr. Charles R. Martin and wife Helen of Port Republic, MD, and daughter Betsy Anderson and husband Bennie of Boone, NC. Nine grandchildren; Julia M. Cook and husband Ken of Charlotte, NC, Robin Martin of Charlotte, NC, J. Andrew Martin and wife Lauren of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Rick Martin and wife Katie of Springboro, OH, Dr. Christopher R. Anderson of Annapolis, MD, Jill Anderson and boyfriend Mark Vest of Blacksburg, VA, Charles J. Martin of Dillon, CO, Elise Martin of Port Republic, MD, Erik Martin of Port Republic, MD, two great-grandchildren, Bryan J. Cook of Charlotte, NC and Henrik Martin of Brooklyn, NY.
Pallbearers will be Bennie Anderson, Dr. Christopher R. Anderson, Ken Cook, Dr. Charles R. Martin, Richard Martin and Ronnie Martin.
The family would like to thank the Staff at Brookdale South Park for all of their love and attention while Mother was in their care.
Flowers will be accepted at the funeral home or memorials may be made to Plaza Presbyterian Church, 2304 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28205.
