Mr. McCorkle, 84, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully at his home, April 1, 2010. He will be remembered for the goodness of his heart and his compassion and care for others. A service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 5, 2010 at McEwen Funeral Service Charlotte Chapel, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212, followed by an interment at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2010, also at McEwen Funeral Service Charlotte Chapel.
Lewis was born on April 9, 1925, in Union County, and was the beloved son of the late George Dewey and Velma Helms McCorkle. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Joyce Orr McCorkle, his childhood sweetheart, whom he has cared for faithfully, and their four children; Gary Lewis McCorkle and wife, Leslie Howie McCorkle, Kevin Dale McCorkle and wife Patricia Peterson McCorkle, Elaine McCorkle Jaros and husband Steven Jaros, and Kim McCorkle Efird and husband Martin Efird. He is also blessed with precious grandchildren; Evan McCorkle, Laura McCorkle, Joshua McCorkle, Erin Efird, Daniel Efird, Madison Jaros, Colin Jaros and Ryan Raspanti. Lewis is also survived by brothers, Leonard McCorkle, Richard McCorkle, Douglas McCorkle, and sisters, Carol McCorkle Sharpe, Judy McCorkle McCaulay, and Madeline McCorkle Allen. Siblings preceding him in death were Bobby McCorkle, Gene McCorkle, and Sue McCorkle Clifton.
Lewis loved listening to music, NASCAR racing, gardening in his yard, and spending time with family. For the past 10 years, he has been the devoted caregiver for his wife, Joyce. Lewis touched the lives of many with his kind and caring heart. Lewis was retired from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department after 44 years of dedicated service.
