Lettie Magnolia (Carder) Massey, of Charlotte, North Carolina, born on May 24, 1933 in Trinity, North Carolina to the late Mary Elizabeth Osborne Carder and the late Erol Olan Carder, passed away at age 85 on April 4, 2019. She graduated from Central High School, Class of 1954.
Lettie was a member of Southview Baptist Church in Charlotte. Her Christian faith played an important role in her life and she was most excited to share her faith with others in both word and action.
Lettie was the beloved wife of the late Donald Lee Massey; former wife of the late Daniel Shoaf. She was preceded in death by her brothers Vestey Carder, Lavoy Carder and Delma Carder; and sister Ruby Arnette.
Lettie is survived by her sons Vernon Massey, Galen Massey and Landon Massey; daughters Titiksa Elaine Thorne and Karin Donalds; grandchildren Donovan Magyer, Bhajan Magyer, Japa Magyer, Ethan Massey, Carlee Hyland, Marlo Mazhari, Brandon Massey, Ayden Massey and Caelin Massey and great-grandchildren Jhulana Magyer, Nayana Magyer and Leo Mazhari. She is also survived by her lifelong friend Ann Wallace and Godson Michael Wallace in addition to a host of loving nieces, nephews and dear friends. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Lettie’s niece Geaneice Johnson for her compassionate comfort and care in the final moments.
Lettie loved writing poetry and was a published poet and violinist. Lettie’s hobbies were gardening, traveling and birdwatching but more than anything else, she loved reflecting on a good day’s work. She owned and operated The Dainty Nut Company with her husband, Donald for over fifteen years. She then worked her way from Master Biscuit Maker to management at Hardee’s with Spartan Food Systems.
In her own words, her greatest accomplishment “shines in the lives of her five very respectful and highly achieved children (she) raised with Donald”. The family invites donations in Lettie’s name to The Humane Society of Charlotte (www.humanesocietyofcharlotte.org) or A Child’s Place (www.achildsplace.org).
