Boyd graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1971. He was a guitarist and vocalist who studied music at the University of Miami, FL. He completed a program at Guitar Institute of Technology (now Musicians’ Institute) in Los Angeles, CA. He graduated from the School of Audio Engineering in Nashville, TN.
He returned to Charlotte and performed as a member of The Noise Boys as well as Toni Naples Music for concerts, wedding receptions and parties for many years. He taught private lessons at Guitar Workshop. Boyd worked for SoundPost Productions as an assistant engineer where he recorded and edited for orchestral, choral and other music groups.
Boyd worked as an audio/video technician for Myers Park United Methodist Church for years.
Boyd was a lifelong member and former deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte. He volunteered as the principal audio technician for the church for about 10 years. He also served as technical adviser and member of the television committee, which oversees production of the church’s live TV broadcast on Sundays.
He helped serve the needs of homeless people in Charlotte through the Urban Ministry (now Roof Above). He also volunteered at Crisis Assistance Ministry and regularly donated blood to the American Red Cross. Alzheimer’s could not rob him of his compassion for others.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, L.B. and Rachel H. Hood, his wife, Linda W. Hood and a nephew, Dustin Woods.
He is survived by his loving family, sisters Megan H. Ellis (Bill), Miriam H. Brauda (Jerry), nephew Jason Brauda (partner Maggie Patterson), cousins and many friends.
He is also survived by brother-in-law Bill Woods (Debbie) and son Tyler, sister-in-law Brenda W. Smith (Bill) and son Ryan Edmiston (Reanna) and great-nephew Hayden Woods.
Following a private committal service, a celebration of Boyd’s life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 200 West Trade St. on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. Visitation will be at 1:30 pm followed by a memorial service at 2 pm, both in Wood Fellowship Hall.
