Mrs. McGee was born in Rowan County and was the daughter of the late James Burkett and Julia Briggs Rice.
Mrs. McGee attended Mt Ulla High School. She was previously employed by Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, before self-employment as a hairdresser for over 54 years.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary Edwin McGee; 2 sisters, Mildred Rice Murdock and Troy Rice Hallman; and one brother, Carl Rice. In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Billie W McGee.
Mrs. McGee centered her life on family and church. She was affectionately called “Gee Gee” by family, church, and neighborhood children. She was recognized by Salem Lutheran Church, Salisbury and by A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church, Charlotte WELCA as lifetime members. She was also honored by A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church for care of its children through the years, as well as being a charter member.
Mrs. McGee is survived by one son James R McGee and wife Barbara; one granddaughter Alyssa McGee Thomas and husband Wayne; one grandson Greg McGee and wife Suzie; 4 great-grandchildren, Raegan and Masden Thomas, Christopher and Katie McGee; 3 sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Miss Laura’s family was not limited to the immediate blood kin. “In-laws” were not “in-laws.” They were “sister” or “brother.” They were cohorts in mischief and fun. She enjoyed dressing up with garden club friends for the local parade – the crazier, the better. Children she knew came to expect chewing gum and a hug. She knew no stranger and was often the first to greet new visitors to church. She was ever thankful for any help she received. Pranks were a specialty and no one was immune, not even a small grandchild. She often gave more than she received and will be missed by many.
Services for Mrs. McGee will be held at A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church, 8200 McClure Circle, Charlotte, NC 28216 starting at 1:30pm on Thursday, June 15, 2017, preceded by visitation from 12 noon to 1:15pm. Burial will follow the service at Forest Lawn West.
Memorials may be sent to A Mighty Fortress Lutheran Church with designation for the Lyerly Sunday School Class or for WELCA (women’s organization), or to Stanley Total Living Center, PO Box 489, Stanley, NC 28164.
The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to Stanley Total Living Center and all its staff for their excellent loving care of Mrs. McGee. STLC and its staff and patients were considered as home with family and friends. She loved them all.
