Mr. Patterson, 74, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on November 12, 2011 at MD Anderson Medical Center in Houston, TX. He was born on August 31, 1937 in China Grove, NC, a son of Louise and Chester Patterson.
Larry was a 1960 graduate of NC State University in Raleigh, and received his MBA from UNC Chapel Hill in 1961. He completed the Executive Program at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. For 33 years, Larry was in banking for Wachovia Bank and Trust Co., where he was a Senior Corporate Banker. After taking early retirement from Wachovia, Larry partnered with George Currin, a fellow banker and friend for over 50 years. Together in 1994, they started Currin-Patterson Properties LLC, which specialized in the development of properties in the southeastern United States.
Larry’s favorite hobby was golf, and he enjoyed many days of competition at Quail Hollow Club with his “shoot out” group. He especially looked forward to his yearly trip to Phoenix with Jere Drummond, Tink Vann and Jim Saffell, where they competed for first place. Larry loved giving golf lessons to his grandchildren, thinking he might have a pro in the making. He was also always available to give sporting advice whenever needed. He was a wonderful father to his three loving daughters who were by his side until the end.
Larry was a life-long learner, excelling in woodworking, gardening, making golf clubs and investigating new projects. He was a board member, treasurer and president of Science Museum of Charlotte; board member, treasurer and president of Charlotte Repertory Theater; board member of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and board member of the University of NC at Charlotte Athletic Foundation.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Whicker Patterson, his high school sweetheart. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year. He is also survived by his three daughters, Julie Anderson and her husband Rich; Stephanie Lucas and her husband LaBruce; Ashley Gray and her husband Geoff. Surviving also are his sister, Jane Patterson, her two children, Whit and Will and her husband Bob Peak. Larry has 7 grandchildren, Will and Jack Anderson, Brooks and Alston Lucas and Elizabeth, Abigail and Walker Gray.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at Harry and Bryant Funeral Home from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. Steven Eason officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Providence Hall at the church. Interment will be private.
