Kristin Rae Skinner, 53, precious daughter, sister, aunt, friend and amazing human being, slipped away peacefully on Saturday, July 2, 2022, in the presence of family and friends. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, and fought the disease with medical, spiritual, healthy lifestyle, mental attitude and any other resource she could find. She was preceded in death by her sister and soulmate, Joelle.
She was born in Neptune, NJ, to David and Rose Skinner, the last of seven children. Prior to moving to Charlotte in 1984, Kristin had lived in Indianapolis and Elkhart, Indiana. Relocation was not pleasant for her, but she made a host of friends and lasting relationships wherever she lived.
As a child Kristin displayed a trait for caring and nurturing her parents, siblings and family pets, so it was no surprise she decided to become a nurse as soon as she graduated from Charlotte Catholic High School. She was inspired by her older siblings to excel academically and she eventually earned a Master’s Degree in Nursing (CRNA) from UNCC and a Master’s Degree in English from Queens College She enjoyed a 32 year career as a nurse at Atrium Health Systems, where she developed some of her most cherished friendships and experiences.
Kristin’s passionate interests included civil rights, environmental protections, climate change, ethical treatment of animals and child abuse issues. Although she wished the best for everyone, she was the champion of the underdog and those who needed help the most. She was a generous supporter of several charitable and public service institutions.
Having no children of her own, Kristin’s family was the keystone of her life. It was clear that if anyone needed anything, she could be counted on. In addition to her parents, she leaves behind her departed sister Joelle’s family - husband Steve and sons Ben and Sam; Her Sisters - Sandy Gordy (Rick); Sheryl Skinner; Shelly Terlep (Tim); Brothers – David Jr. (Carol); Doug (Lily); Niece’s – Olivia Terlep, Hannah Terlep, Tessa Terlep, Carly Skinner; Nephews – Jay Skinner, Charlie Skinner, Willie Skinner, Jake Gordy, Jack Gordy, Matt Gordy. She also leaves a host of aunts, uncles and cousins spread far and wide.
Kristin lived an exemplary life. She was and will continue to be an inspiration to all who knew her. She enriched every life she touched and those surely number in the hundreds. Farewell, our sweet angel.
Her family will hold a visitation on 7/22/22, from 4:00 PM to 5:45 PM, to be followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
