J.W. Stamey, 80, of Charlotte got a call from our Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 17th. There was a reunion with his wife, Mariyana, of 50 years; his mom and dad, Claude Stamey and Bonnie Williams Stockton; his best friend and sister Betty Jo McCravy; his brother Herbert; sisters Mary Ellen and Mossie; his infant son Shawn; daughter Katie; and family and friends he had not seen in a long time. He is dancing to Blue Suede Shoes and eating bean soup with cornbread and buttermilk which only his wife and sister could make it just right.
He worked 25 years during the day as a Master Mechanic for the City of Sarasota, but all other times he was a plumber, electrician, Miss Sarasota softball coach, carpenter, painter, fisherman, golfer, gun carryier, veteran of the Korean War and Air Force, bachelor party chaperone to his nephew/son Vernon Glen McCravy, safety first monitor, babysitter, banker, reading buddy, member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, godfather to Spryng Norrie, Kate and Courtney Martin; lover of family time with his three brothers Bill, Dan and Dover Williams and sister Ruth Jennings, daughter Elizabeth Stamey-Darling, grandchildren Michelle Moody, Dusty Harrison, Tracy Kazy, numerous cousins, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews who would give him joy, and #1 fan and cheerleader to his daughter, Sharon and son-in-law Bill Storck along with his grandchildren, Caitlin and Spencer, who hung the moon, and had the honor of having him in their home for the past 17 years.
The family will welcome friends at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 20 with a celebration service to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park. Arrangements are by McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park. Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or Levine Cancer Center where he received loving care by Dr. Daniel Haggstrom and his staff.
