Born September 27, 1922 in Charlotte, Mr. Black was a son of the late Martin Lee Black and Edna Rigler Black. Following graduation from Central High School in 1939, he furthered his education at Duke University, where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha and Phi Beta Kappa fraternities, and graduated in 1943 with a degree in Accounting.
In 1944, Mr. Black joined the U. S. Navy Air Corps and received commission from Columbia University. He left active duty in 1946 as Lieutenant J. G. He then began his career in public accounting and joined Kendall Company, retiring in 1980 as Corporate Controller.
He was a member of the North Carolina Association of CPA’s, American Institute of CPA’s, Financial Executives Institute and Charlotte Textile Club, as well as Dilworth United Methodist Church.
Mr. Black loved his beach home at Garden City Beach, SC and was an avid Duke fan.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Black; his daughter, Terry Thompson and her husband, Robert; his son, Ken Black and his wife, Janet; and four grandchildren, Lisa Jenkins and husband, John, Jeff Thompson and wife, Amy, Doug Black and wife, Megan, and Kevin Black and wife, Megan; as well as four great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate Mr. Black’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 6th in the Clubhouse of The Cypress, 3442 Cypress Club Drive. Interment will be private.
Mr. Black’s family would like to thank the nursing staff of Stewart Health Center and the many caregivers who have helped throughout the years, especially Val Dzhanumova.
